Grid Support - Frequency Controlled Instantaneous Reserve

We would like to be able to perform fast IR* support with our OEMS controlled inverter. Has this been implemented by anyone?

*Instantaneous Reserve is a response to grid frequency dropping below a certain frequency (49.2 Hz here in NZ). When this occurs the inverter should switch to dispatching energy as quickly as possible. The power grid pays based on speed of response so speed really is importatnt. Here in NZ this is most likely to be needed when our one coal power station faults.

@NiallDarwin We (at FENECON) did something like this before. See this post in German:

From experience it’s always best if the Battery Inverter can do this directly; but if not possible or sufficiently advanced for the application, EMS can do it as well.

If I remember correctly we achieved 1.2 seconds from Frequency Drop till Full Power Discharge of the battery, which was the requirement for FFR (Fast Frequency Response) here.

Thank you for that summary @stefan.feilmeier. I agree, within the inverter is the obvious place for this with an option in the OEMS controllers to enable this feature.

At the same time as posting this query I contacted the inverter manufacturer (Sinexcel, PWS2 30) and asked if this feature exists. So far no response (No FER-Fast Email Response :laughing: ) but we’ll see if they have anything.

Here in NZ there is Fast and Slow IR/FR. For fast we need to react within a second and the event only lasts 60 seconds. For Slow we must react within a minute and the event lasts 1 hour.

It depends on how “to react” is defined. If it means “one second from event start to full power discharge” it can be tough, but it’s possible. It’s not only EMS, but also detailed configuration of the grid meter reaction time and inverter ramps. 60 seconds is no problem of course.
